7 WINTER MAKEUP MUST HAVES
Winter is the season for cozy sweaters, snow-dusted rooftops, and steaming cups of hot chocolate. It’s also a great time to embrace more glamorous makeup looks! From a beaming highlight to a bold eyeliner, these are the winter makeup must-haves to transition your routine for the season.
This post is all about winter makeup must-haves.
Winter Makeup
Hydrating long-wear foundation
We switch up our skincare in the winter, so why shouldn’t we switch up our makeup? Finding a foundation that can help keep your skin feeling hydrated during the winter is essential. Even if you have oilier skin, you may still want to put down your matte foundation in favor of one that can help you get through the dry months of winter. Wearability is also super important in the winter. You want your foundation to hold up against dryness and harsher weather conditions.
I recommend the NARS Light Reflecting Foundation. It’s a medium to full, buildable coverage foundation with a natural finish that can work with all skin types. It’s infused with skincare ingredients to provide hydration throughout the day and give you a healthy-looking complexion. A more affordable recommendation is the Maybelline Super Stay Skin Tint. While it’s called a skin tint, it performs just like a foundation with a natural finish and light to medium buildable coverage. It has a lightweight feel and is long-wearing. The Maybelline skin tint has a little bit more glow than the NARS foundation and feels a bit more hydrating, so this is especially great for anyone with dry skin.
berry-toned blush
Yes, the bright Barbie pink blush was so fun in the spring and summer, but it’s time to put it back on the shelf and grab a deeper berry-toned blush instead! Go bolder to make your winter makeup look stand out. I recommend choosing a cream blush to add a little more hydration and keep your makeup looking fresh. Cream blushes also tend to wear longer, especially when set with powder. This can be really helpful when combating the harsher weather of winter.
I love the Makeup By Mario Soft Pop Cream Blushes! They are so easy to use, and they give the skin a healthy look while adding beautiful color. The shades Rose Crush and Berry Punch are perfect for winter! Another great cream blush for winter is the Rare Beauty Soft Pinch Liquid Blushes. These cream blushes are incredibly pigmented and have amazing all-day wearability. There are so many shades to choose from. I recommend Truth, Faith, and Grace for a beautiful winter berry shade.
smoothing setting powder
Just because it’s winter doesn’t mean you should skip the setting powder! Setting powder is the key to getting a flawless look. Your skin may look and feel a little duller in the winter, but don’t let your makeup keep it that way. Look for a setting powder that isn’t too matte but will lock your makeup in place while giving you an airbrushed finish. This will help to bring all the elements of your winter makeup look together!
I fell in love with the Makeup By Mario SurrealSkin Soft Blur Setting Powder when it first launched! It really does give the skin a soft blurring effect. Whenever I wear this, my makeup looks airbrushed while still looking natural and skinlike throughout the day.

If you have oilier skin, I highly recommend the Lunar Beauty Lunarversal Setting Powder. This powder is so lightweight and gives a beautiful, blurred matte finish to the skin. It is more matte than the Makeup By Mario setting powder, so if you have drier skin, you may not like this one.
beaming highlight
Don’t skip the glow just because it’s winter! The sun may set a lot earlier, and there might be more gloomy days in winter, but you can still bring the glow by not skipping your highlight. A beaming highlight is a great way to easily bring more glam to your makeup look.
The Patrick Ta Major Glow Creme Highlights are a perfect multidimensional glow! You get a powder and a cream highlight in one. The cream is meant to go on top of the powder to melt the products together and give your highlight a dewy look. I recommend the shade Sugar because it’s a classic champagne highlight shade, but if you want to go bolder with a frosty highlight, the shade My Love is perfect.
If you’re looking for something softer and more natural, I absolutely love Benefit Highlighter in Dandelion Twinkle. It’s the perfect everyday highlight but can be built up to add more glow.
cool toned eyeshadow
It’s all about the cool tones in winter! Whether you’re embracing full glam or going for a simple everyday look, you want to get yourself a great, universal, cool-toned eyeshadow palette.
I’m obsessed with the Makeup By Mario Master Mattes The Neutrals Eye Shadow Palette! The formula is amazing; the powder is really creamy and easy to blend on the eyelids. You get a great range of shades for every day but can also use the darker shades for a going-out look. If you’re looking for a more affordable option that also has shimmer shades, you need to check out the Colourpop Stone Cold Fox Eyeshadow Palette. This palette has 30 beautiful cool-toned shades with a great range of mattes, shimmers, and metallic shades.
bold eyeliner
A bold, black, long-wearing eyeliner should be a staple in your winter makeup collection! Make a statement and elevate your eye makeup with bold eyeliner. It’s important to find one that is long-lasting, especially if you’re going to be outside dealing with the harsh weather effects.
The Stila All Day Liquid Liner has been a bestseller for years! It’s a long-wear, waterproof eyeliner with an easy-to-glide felt top to get the perfect line or wing. Another favorite of mine is the Benefit Roller Liner. It has a bit more of a matte finish than the Stila eyeliner, but it’s also really easy to use, and it glides on smoothly to get a precise line.
vibrant lips
Complete your makeup look with a beautiful bold lip! This is the season to bring in vibrant colors to brighten things up during the drearier months. Whether it’s a deeper berry shade or an unforgettable red lip, you will be sure to make your winter makeup stand out.
Rare Beauty has a number of different lip products in beautiful bold shades. If you want a little more glossiness to your lips, you’ll love their Stay Vulnerable Glossy Lip Balm. It’s a nice, hydrating lip gloss that still gives good color payoff. The shades Nearly Berry and Nearly Mauve are great for winter! Another great gloss option is the Tower 28 Clean ShineOn Jelly Lip Gloss. It’s a non-sticky gloss formula that looks so juicy on the lips. The shades Wild and Sesame make a perfect winter lip!
Looking for a more affordable option? Check out Colourpop! They have many different lip products to choose from, but you can’t go wrong with their OG Lippie Stix. They have so many vibrant shades that are perfect for winter.
